January 11th to January 27th
Handball History
The first World Handball Championships were held in Germany in 1938. The hosts won against teams from Austria, Sweden and Denmark. At the last tournament in Sweden in 2011, France beat Denmark 37-35 after extra-time in a handball extravaganza.
The Tournament
This year Spain hosts, and the group stages are being held across the country in Seville, Granollers, Zaragoza and Madrid. The final phase then is focused on just two cities, Zaragoza and Barcelona, with the latter hosting the final on the 27th of January at the Palau Sant Jordi up on Montjuic.
If you have never seen a Handball match they are great entertainment. End to end action, time-outs, sin-bins and loads of goals. The atmosphere inside the venues is fabulous and the fans are colourful and loud! We have put up some videos so you can see what we mean.
